Harvard University is spread through the middle of Cambridge, Massachusetts, but its heart is Harvard Yard, a fenced enclosure of lawns, paths and brick buildings next to Harvard Square. From above, the Yard's tidy outline stands out against the irregular streets of old Cambridge, which bend and meet at odd angles all around it.
Founded in 1636, Harvard is the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States. South of the Yard, the undergraduate houses line the Charles River with their courtyards and towers, and across the water in Allston sit the Business School, Harvard Stadium and a growing newer campus. The river bends here, and several bridges cross it close together.
A Harvard University map poster shows how the university grew out from the Yard in every direction: the law school and science buildings to the north, the river houses to the south, museums and libraries in between.
