Hato Mayor del Rey is the capital of Hato Mayor Province in the east of the Dominican Republic. The name recalls the cattle ranches, or hatos, of the colonial period, and the country around the town is still largely agricultural. On the map the town is a compact grid of streets around a central plaza, set in rolling green land.
The regular layout of the centre gives way at the edges to more irregular streets, following the lie of the land and the roads that run out to other towns in the east. Streams cross the surrounding countryside, and the fields and pastures leave the town with a sharp, clear outline against open ground.
