Herne lies in the middle of the Ruhr, and on the map it is almost impossible to say where it ends and Bochum, Gelsenkirchen or Castrop-Rauxel begin. The city is a patchwork of former mining communities joined by roads and railways. It has two focal points: the old centre of Herne and the separate core of Wanne-Eickel, which merged with it in 1975.
The Rhine–Herne Canal cuts across the northern part of the city in a straight east–west line. It runs parallel to the Emscher, a river that served as an open sewer for decades and has since been restored. Motorways cross the area too. Around them, the map fills with former colliery sites turned into parks, trading estates and allotment gardens.
Every August, the Crange district hosts the Cranger Kirmes beside the canal, one of the largest funfairs in Germany. Close to the centre, the moated Schloss Strünkede adds a small area of water and parkland.
