Hessisch Oldendorf lies in the Hameln-Pyrmont district of Lower Saxony, in the valley of the Weser. The historic town is small, a compact cluster of streets on the valley floor. Around it, the map shows a wide municipality of villages scattered along the river and up into the surrounding hills, linked by country roads and a railway running along the valley.
The name reflects the town's past. For centuries it belonged to the County of Schaumburg, and when that county was divided in the seventeenth century this part passed to Hesse-Kassel, which gave the town its prefix. In 1633, during the Thirty Years' War, the Battle of Oldendorf was fought nearby. The Weser loops across the valley with meadows and fields along its banks.
