Hoopstad lies in the north-western Free State, where farmland stretches to the horizon and roads run straight for long distances. The town follows a clear grid, a common pattern for Free State settlements laid out in the nineteenth century, with wide blocks and streets meeting at right angles. Beyond the grid, the map opens into large rectangular fields that continue in every direction.
The Vet River passes close to the town on its way to the Vaal, and its winding course is the one natural curve in an otherwise geometric landscape. Along the river, small drainage lines and cultivated plots break up the land. Elsewhere, the district is known for maize and other grain crops, grown on fields large enough to read clearly even at a wide scale.

Vet River
The river loops past the town in slow bends, lined by a thin band of vegetation. It is the only strongly curving line on the map and gives the composition its movement.
Farm roads
Long, straight roads run out into the countryside and divide it into large fields. They lead the eye to the edges of the print and show the scale of the surrounding land.
