Hude lies in the Oldenburg district of Lower Saxony, on the low, flat ground between Oldenburg and Bremen. The railway linking those two cities runs straight through the town, and much of Hude's street pattern has grown up on either side of it, with residential roads curving out into the surrounding fields, woods and moorland.
The town's best-known landmark is the ruin of Hude Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in the Middle Ages. Its tall red-brick gable wall, with the outline of great pointed windows, still stands among trees at the edge of the centre and is a notable example of the brick Gothic architecture of northern Germany.
