Icó lies on the Salgado River in the interior of Ceará, in northeastern Brazil's semi-arid sertão. On a map the town sits beside the river's winding course, with a historic core of long streets and squares near the water. Newer neighbourhoods spread over the higher ground, and dry scrubland and farmland stretch in every direction.
Icó is one of the oldest towns in Ceará. It grew in the eighteenth century as a trading stop on cattle routes crossing the backlands. Its historic centre, with colonial churches, townhouses and the nineteenth-century Teatro da Ribeira dos Icós, is protected as national heritage.
An Icó map poster shows the quiet layout of an old sertão town. Streets are straighter in the historic centre and looser towards the edges. The curve of the Salgado and the roads leading out across the open plain make up the rest. In the warmer Sand or Paper styles, it recalls the tones of the landscape.
