‘Irbīn Map Poster
‘Irbīn lies in Eastern Ghouta, the agricultural belt on the eastern side of Damascus, a few kilometres from the centre of the capital. On the map it forms a dense cluster of streets and closely built blocks. It is so closely connected with neighbouring towns that the boundaries between settlements are often hard to see from above.
For generations the Ghouta was known for its orchards and gardens, watered by channels drawn from the Barada river system, and fields still separate some of the towns. ‘Irbīn was heavily affected by the Syrian war, and many families were displaced. Rebuilding and return have been gradual, and the town remains an important part of the Damascus countryside.
