Jaffa sits where the straight Mediterranean coastline of Tel Aviv suddenly bends. The old town stands on a small rounded hill above the sea, and its lanes curl inwards towards the summit. Below, the harbour forms a compact basin held by a breakwater. From the hill the streets fan out east and south into later neighbourhoods, whose grids feel looser and wider than the tight core.
Jaffa is one of the oldest continuously used ports in the region. It appears in the Hebrew Bible and in the legends of Andromeda and Jonah. In the Ottoman period, a stone clock tower was built at the edge of the old town, and it still marks the junction where the coast road turns inland. The flea market spreads through the blocks just behind it.
Jaffa merged with Tel Aviv in 1950, and the city's full name is now Tel Aviv-Yafo. The seam between the two still shows on the map, where the curving streets of Jaffa meet Tel Aviv's more regular blocks.
