Jesús María lies immediately north of the city of Aguascalientes and has become part of its metropolitan area, though it keeps its own centre and identity. The original town is a small grid of streets around a main square and parish church, and on a map this older core is easy to pick out from the larger, more uniform neighbourhoods that surround it.
Over recent decades housing developments have spread across the valley in every direction, forming distinctive shapes of curved streets, cul-de-sacs and gated blocks. Main roads connecting the town with Aguascalientes cut straight through this pattern, and on the outskirts development gives way to irrigated fields and dry land, while a river course winds through the valley nearby.
