Jouy-le-Moutier is on the right bank of the Oise, north-west of Paris, and belongs to the Cergy-Pontoise new town. The river bends in a wide loop here, and the town climbs the slope above it. From above, the water, the riverside green spaces and the terraced streets all line up in bands.
The map shows two very different patterns. The old village has an irregular cluster of lanes around its church. The neighbourhoods built from the 1970s onwards, as part of the new town, have curving residential roads, cul-de-sacs and footpaths laid out around greenery. The two sit side by side and are easy to tell apart.
