Kollegāl lies in Chamarajanagar district, close to where the Kaveri turns toward the Tamil Nadu border. From above, it is a tight, older town centre with lanes packed around the market streets. Main roads run outward toward neighbouring towns, and irrigated fields surround the built-up edge.
The town has long been known for silk. Kollegāl's handlooms and sericulture are part of the wider silk economy of southern Karnataka, and weaving families have worked here for generations. The Shivanasamudra falls on the Kaveri and the hills of the Male Mahadeshwara range are both within reach.
