Kortenberg lies in Flemish Brabant, almost exactly halfway between Brussels and Leuven. The map is shaped by transport. The railway line between the two cities crosses the municipality, and the E40 motorway runs close by. Between and around them, residential streets, village centres and patches of farmland and woodland fit together in a typical Flemish patchwork.
The name is well known in Belgian history. In 1312 the Charter of Kortenberg was granted here, an early document that limited the duke's power and set up a council. It is often cited as one of the first constitutional texts in Europe. The former abbey of Kortenberg is part of the same story and is still a landmark in the town.
A Kortenberg map poster shows the balance between suburb and countryside. Straight transport corridors cut across softer village streets, and open fields separate the separate centres of the municipality. In black and white, it is a clear portrait of life in the green belt between two cities.
