The main campus of Kyoto University lies in the Yoshida area of northeastern Kyoto, where the city's regular streets meet the foot of the eastern hills. From above, the campus appears as a set of large blocks divided by straight roads. The Kamo River runs north to south a short distance to the west, and the slopes of Yoshida-yama and Higashiyama rise to the east.
Founded in 1897 as Kyoto Imperial University, it was the second of Japan's imperial universities. It has produced several Nobel laureates, including Hideki Yukawa, the first Japanese winner. The campus clock tower, completed in the 1920s, is its best-known building, and the Philosopher's Path runs beside a canal not far to the east.
