Lamu Map Poster
Lamu sits on the island of the same name in the Lamu Archipelago, off Kenya's northern coast. From above, the old town is a tight mass of buildings along a sheltered channel. Its lanes are so narrow that the map shows fine threads rather than streets. Behind the town the built area thins out into sand and scrub, and the mangrove-edged shoreline curves away on both sides.
Lamu Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is often described as the oldest continuously inhabited Swahili settlement in East Africa. Coral-stone houses, carved doors and mosques line lanes that were laid out for people and donkeys, not cars. The waterfront promenade is the one wide, straight line in a town that otherwise turns inward.

Inland, the lanes break the town into small irregular blocks. Archipelago waters
Channels, mangrove creeks and neighbouring islands surround Lamu. They add pale open space and soft, irregular coastlines around the settlement.
