Lausanne rises from the northern shore of Lake Geneva in a series of steep terraces. Down at the water is Ouchy, with its harbour and lakeside promenade. The historic centre sits about five hundred metres higher on the cathedral hill. Between them, streets zigzag up the slopes, and bridges such as the Grand-Pont cross valleys that were partly filled or covered as the city grew.
The terrain shapes every part of the map. Roads curve along contour lines, and the Flon valley in the centre is now a district of its own. Lausanne's M2 metro is one of the steepest in the world, climbing from the lake to the northern districts. Parks and vineyards fill the slopes to the east toward Lavaux.
A Lausanne map poster also shows the university campuses to the west, where EPFL and the University of Lausanne sit by the lake. The city is home to the International Olympic Committee and the Olympic Museum at Ouchy. For that reason Lausanne is often called the Olympic Capital.
