Leerdam lies on the river Linge in the flat Dutch river country, now part of Utrecht province. The historic centre is compact, enclosed by the old line of its fortifications and water, with the Linge curving along one side. Around it, newer neighbourhoods follow the straight lines of the polders, divided by ditches and dikes into a landscape of long rectangles.
The town is known across the Netherlands as a centre of glassmaking. The Royal Leerdam glassworks has operated here since the nineteenth century, and the National Glass Museum is in the town. Leerdam is also associated with the cheese that carries its name.
