Leonberg lies about 15 kilometres west of Stuttgart, on the edge of the Glems valley. Its historic core sits on a spur of higher ground. The map shows a compact knot of old streets around the market square, surrounded by later residential districts, industrial areas and the incorporated villages of Eltingen, Höfingen, Gebersheim and Warmbronn.
Two facts usually come up when people talk about Leonberg. It gave its name to the Leonberger, a large dog breed developed here in the nineteenth century. It also sits beside the motorway junction where the A8 and A81 meet, and where the Engelberg Tunnel carries traffic under the hill. The town has a restored Renaissance terraced garden too, the Pomeranzengarten.
