Lethbridge Map Poster
Lethbridge sits on the open prairie of southern Alberta, but a sudden drop defines its map. The Oldman River has cut a wide valley through the middle of the city, lined with steep, eroded coulees. On one side lie downtown and the older grid of numbered streets and avenues. On the other, West Lethbridge climbs back onto the plateau in curving suburban crescents.
The Lethbridge Viaduct spans the valley. This steel railway trestle was completed in 1909 and is still one of the longest and highest of its kind in the world. On the west bank, the University of Lethbridge stretches along the coulee edge in a long, low building by Arthur Erickson. It is fitted into the slope rather than set on top of it.
A Lethbridge map poster brings out that division clearly: disciplined blocks, an empty band of river bottom with parks and trails, and newer neighbourhoods laid out in loops. On the east side, Henderson Lake and the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden beside it add a neat oval of water. The result is an unusually strong composition for a city of its size.

High Level Bridge
The railway viaduct crosses the valley in a long straight line. It is one of the few links between the two halves of the city and a striking detail in fine print.
Numbered street grid
East of the river the city follows a regular grid of numbered streets and avenues. The pattern is typical of prairie towns and looks very clean in black and white.
