Liberty Island lies in Upper New York Bay, a short distance south of Ellis Island and close to the New Jersey shore, with Lower Manhattan across the water to the north-east. It is small and compact, and almost all of it is given over to a single monument and the lawns, walkways and buildings around it.
The Statue of Liberty, a gift from France dedicated in 1886, stands on the walls of Fort Wood, an earlier fortification built in the shape of an eleven-pointed star. That star is the most memorable shape on any map of the island, a sharp geometric figure set in the middle of a harbour of soft, irregular shorelines.
The ferry pier where visitors land, the museum and the paths around the shore complete the picture.
