Lydenburg, officially renamed Mashishing, lies in the highlands of Mpumalanga. It was founded in 1849 by Voortrekkers who left the fever-prone settlement at Ohrigstad, and the name is usually translated as town of suffering. The original town was set out on a regular grid, and from above that plan is still easy to read at the centre.
Around the grid, the landscape takes over. Roads leave town toward the mountains, most famously east over the Long Tom Pass toward Sabie, where the route winds through switchbacks up the escarpment. Streams and farmland fill the open ground, and newer neighbourhoods extend the town outward in less regular shapes.
The area is also known for the Lydenburg Heads, terracotta sculptures found nearby and dated to roughly the sixth century. A Lydenburg map poster brings together the order of the old street grid and the looser lines of the roads and valleys around it.
