Machala sits on the low coastal plain of southern Ecuador, where the land flattens out before meeting a maze of estuaries and mangrove channels. From above, the city reads as a steady grid of blocks laid across level ground, with few hills to bend the streets. The capital of El Oro province, it grew as a trading centre for the farms that surround it on every side.
Those farms explain much of the city's character. Machala is widely known as a banana capital, and plantations press close to its edges, their straight access roads continuing the geometry of the urban grid. To the west, a road runs out to Puerto Bolívar, the harbour that ships the fruit, where the tidy blocks give way to docks and the ragged lines of the shore.

The city's port lies a short drive west, where the road meets the estuary. On the map, the neat inland blocks give way to piers, quays and the irregular edge of the water.

Beyond the port, the shoreline dissolves into a lacework of channels and islands along the Gulf of Guayaquil, a striking contrast to the straight streets of the centre.
