Marapong sits on the open bushveld of the Waterberg in Limpopo, a short distance from the town of Lephalale. From above it looks like a dense block of small plots and short, closely spaced streets. Its regular layout stands apart from the scattered farms and dry scrub around it. The township grew to house the people who work in the area's mines and power stations, and its plan still shows that purpose.
The surroundings give the map its character. Large industrial sites lie close by, including the Grootegeluk coal mine and the Matimba and Medupi power stations. Their sharp geometric outlines contrast with the fine grain of the residential streets. Long access roads and rail lines cut straight across the landscape and tie the township to the plants that generate a large share of South Africa's electricity.
