Marche-en-Famenne sits in the Famenne, the low, gently rolling depression that runs between the Condroz plateau and the higher ground of the Ardennes in southern Belgium. From above, the town has a clear heart: a small, dense historic centre from which roads radiate toward Namur, Liège, Bastogne and the surrounding villages, each one pulling a thin trail of houses into the fields.
The town was once fortified, and traces of that past survive in the streets of the centre. Its best-known moment in European history came in 1577, when the Perpetual Edict was signed here, a short-lived settlement between the Spanish crown and the rebellious provinces of the Low Countries. Today Marche is a regional service town and a crossroads for the Belgian Ardennes.
