Meppen is the district town of Emsland in Lower Saxony, near the Dutch border. It grew at the confluence of the Hase and the Ems, and water defines its map: the two rivers meet at the edge of the old town, and the Dortmund-Ems Canal runs alongside, adding a straight artificial line to the natural curves. The historic centre sits within this watery frame.
The town was once a fortress, and although most of the defences are gone, their outline is still suggested by the shape of the old centre and the green spaces around it. The market square with its town hall forms the heart of the old town, surrounded by a tight pattern of short streets that contrasts with the wide, open river landscape beyond.
Beyond the centre, residential districts spread across the flat Emsland countryside, with fields, woods and moorland not far away.
