Mörfelden-Walldorf lies in southern Hesse, directly south of Frankfurt Airport. The town was formed in 1977 by joining two separate places, Mörfelden and Walldorf, and on a map they still appear as two distinct centres. Each has its own street network, linked by roads and a railway line, with woodland and fields between them.
Walldorf was founded at the end of the seventeenth century by Waldensian refugees, and its original layout still has a clear, planned feel. Forests surround both towns, part of the large woodland belt south of Frankfurt. To the north, the airport's runways and infrastructure cut across the landscape in long, straight shapes.
