Mount Eden takes its name and shape from Maungawhau, the volcanic cone at its centre. On a map the summit and its deep crater are an unmistakable round form, and the streets around it bend to follow the contours before straightening into the rectangular suburban blocks further out. It is one of the clearest examples of Auckland's volcanic landscape showing through the street plan.
Maungawhau is the highest natural point on the Auckland isthmus, and its crater is a protected site. Mount Eden Road and Dominion Road run roughly north to south nearby, carrying the main traffic toward the city centre, while Eden Park, the city's main rugby and cricket ground, lies a short distance to the west.
A Mount Eden map poster works because the terrain is doing the design: a circle of green in the middle, a ring of curving residential streets, and long straight arterials pulling away toward town. It is a small area with a very strong centre.
