Nacka lies just east of central Stockholm, where the mainland breaks up into bays, inlets and islands on the way to the archipelago. On a map, water sits on nearly every side. Neighbourhoods follow the shorelines and the contours of the rocky ground, and the street network is a loose web of curving roads rather than a grid.
Large areas of forest and lakes, including the Nacka nature reserve, remain inside the municipality, so dense housing gives way quickly to woodland trails and small bodies of water. Along the waterfront, former industrial sites such as Sickla and Nacka Strand have been turned into residential and commercial districts linked closely to the city.
