Il-mappa
Nagasaki grew around one of the finest natural harbours in Japan. From above, a narrow bay reaches deep inland from the sea, and the city wraps around its head and spills up the steep slopes on every side. Streets climb in switchbacks and stairways. The flatter ground follows the Urakami valley to the north and the small Nakashima River through the old centre.
For more than two centuries Nagasaki was Japan's main window to the outside world. During the period of national seclusion, the Dutch trading post operated here on Dejima, a small fan-shaped artificial island, and the Chinese community had its own quarter. On 9 August 1945 an atomic bomb struck the city. The Peace Park in the Urakami district stands near the hypocentre.
A Nagasaki map poster shows a city that had to fit into a tight landscape. The harbour splits the composition in two, and the hills leave blank spaces around dense neighbourhoods. Mount Inasa rises on the western shore across the water. In the historic centre, the stone arches of the Meganebashi, the Spectacles Bridge, cross the Nakashima River.
The long, narrow bay dominates the map, reaching from the open sea into the heart of the city. Shipyards and piers line both shores.
The former Dutch trading post is still visible as a fan-shaped block in the centre. Its outline survives inside the reclaimed land that now surrounds it.
North of the centre, the city runs up the flat Urakami valley in a narrow band of streets between hills. The valley holds the Peace Park and Urakami Cathedral.
