Nashville sits on the Cumberland River, which winds through the city in a series of broad loops. From above, downtown is a compact grid on the west bank, facing a sharp bend in the river, with the State Capitol on a small hill at its northern edge. Across the water, East Nashville spreads in a looser pattern of residential streets.
Beyond the centre, several interstates, including I-40, I-65 and I-24, meet in an inner loop around downtown and then radiate out in all directions. Neighbourhoods such as The Gulch, Germantown and Music Row fill the gaps between these highways, each with its own street pattern. Further out, the river's meanders enclose peninsulas of parkland and farmland.
Known as Music City, Nashville is home to the Grand Ole Opry, the Ryman Auditorium and the honky-tonks of Lower Broadway. Centennial Park holds a full-scale replica of the Parthenon, a reminder of the city's nineteenth-century nickname, the Athens of the South.
