Nasu Sosui channels
Irrigation canals dug across the dry Nasu plain in the 1880s still run through the farmland. They draw thin lines that cut across the regular field pattern and link scattered settlements.

Il-mappa
Nasushiobara sits in the north of Tochigi Prefecture, where the Nasu plain spreads out as a wide, gently tilted fan of land between mountain rivers. From above, the city centre around the shinkansen station is a compact knot of streets. Beyond it the pattern loosens into long, straight farm roads, scattered villages and field boundaries that follow the slope of the ground toward the southeast.
The city was formed in 2005 by merging Kuroiso, Nishinasuno and the mountain town of Shiobara, and the map still shows that three-part character. For a long time the plain was too dry to farm well. That changed in the 1880s, when the Nasu Sosui canal brought water across it, and its channels still run as a quiet thread through the grid of fields.
To the west the land folds into the valley of the Hōki River, where the Shiobara hot springs line a single winding road between steep forested slopes. A Nasushiobara map poster holds both halves in one frame: the open geometry of the plain and the tight, sinuous line of the gorge, drawn in fine black strokes that reward a closer look.

In the western mountains a single road follows the Hōki River through a narrow valley lined with hot-spring inns. It makes a long, curving line that contrasts with the open plain.
Nasushiobara Station on the Tohoku Shinkansen anchors a newer town centre, where denser blocks and parallel streets form the most tightly drawn part of the map.
