Newport sits on the south bank of the Ohio River in Northern Kentucky, where the Licking River flows in from the south, with Covington on the opposite bank. From above, the city is a tight grid of narrow lots and row houses on the flat ground by the rivers, and the land rises toward hills to the south. Several bridges connect it directly to downtown Cincinnati.
The riverfront is home to the Newport Aquarium and a shopping and entertainment district. The Purple People Bridge, a former rail bridge now used by pedestrians, links the city to Cincinnati. In the mid-twentieth century Newport was known for illegal gambling, a reputation it later worked hard to leave behind. The East Row historic district keeps many of its nineteenth-century houses.
