North Sentinel Island lies west of South Andaman in the Bay of Bengal. From above it is a compact, almost squarish block of forest, edged with narrow beaches and surrounded by a wide fringing reef. It has no roads, no harbour and no mapped settlement, so the map shows only the coastline and the reef around it.
The island is home to the Sentinelese, one of the most isolated peoples in the world, who have consistently rejected contact with outsiders. The Indian government bars visitors from approaching, and a protected zone surrounds the island. Nothing about the interior is charted in the way ordinary towns or islands are.
A North Sentinel Island map poster is therefore a study in outline: a quiet shape of land, the pale band of reef and open sea on every side. The reef around it became wider after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake raised the seabed in the region. The print records the place from a distance, which is the only way it can be seen.
