Oshkosh lies on the western shore of Lake Winnebago, the largest inland lake in Wisconsin, at the point where the Fox River flows in from Lake Butte des Morts. The river divides the city into north and south halves, crossed by a series of bridges, while the lake forms a long, clean eastern edge to the map.
The streets follow the familiar Midwestern grid, bending where the river and shoreline demand.
