Oss lies in the northeast of North Brabant, on the flat land south of the river Maas. It is known as a birthplace of Dutch industry. Margarine makers Jurgens and Van den Bergh, whose companies later became part of Unilever, started here, and the town also became home to the pharmaceutical company Organon. That industrial history is visible on the map.
The centre is compact, with a small market square and streets radiating outward. The railway runs past it, and large industrial zones stretch alongside it and toward the north, where the Maas and its dikes form the edge of the municipality. Beyond that, the land is flat and open, divided into fields, polders and scattered villages linked by straight roads.
