Owerri, the capital of Imo State in southeastern Nigeria, is shaped by its rivers. The Otamiri runs along the eastern side of the city and the Nworie along the south, and the main roads and older districts sit between them. Beyond this core, newer residential areas stretch outward along the main highways in a more open, planned pattern of streets.
In Nigeria the city is known as a centre of hospitality and entertainment, with a hotel and events scene that draws visitors from across the southeast. Its cultural landmarks include the Mbari Cultural Centre, which preserves the Igbo tradition of mbari houses. These sculptural shrines were built as offerings to Ala, the earth deity.
