Pleven sits in the rolling country of northern Bulgaria, and from above it reads as a dense core with apartment districts spreading out across the surrounding slopes. Main roads leave the centre in several directions, toward the Danube plain in the north and the Balkan foothills in the south. The streets bend with the terrain, so the plan follows the land instead of a strict grid.
The city is best known for the Siege of Plevna in 1877, a turning point in the Russo-Turkish War that gave Bulgaria its path to independence. That history left memorials, a panorama museum and parkland. Skobelev Park is one example, and on a map it shows as a distinct open patch with paths inside it, set among the tighter blocks around it.
A Pleven map poster shows these layers well. The historic centre is a knot of short streets. The residential quarters form a looser pattern of long blocks, and to the south the Kaylaka park stretches along a narrow valley.
