Porto Franco lies on the east bank of the Tocantins river, in the southwest of Maranhão. The river is broad here and forms the border with Tocantins state; directly across the water is the town of Tocantinópolis. On the map, Porto Franco's street grid sits right on the riverbank, and the wide water fills much of the frame.
The town's position has always been tied to crossing and trade. Roads from the interior converge here, and the river links it to towns up and down the Tocantins. Around the urban grid, the land opens into cerrado savanna and farmland, with roads stretching out in long straight lines.
