Poti sits on the Black Sea coast of western Georgia, where the Rioni River reaches the sea. From above, water surrounds it on nearly every side. The river divides into channels, the harbour's breakwaters and basins jut out into the sea and the broad Paliastomi Lake lies just to the south.
Poti is Georgia's main seaport and has been a gateway to the Colchis lowland for a very long time. Its centre was reorganised in the late nineteenth century around a central square. The large cathedral there, completed in 1907, was modelled on Hagia Sophia in Istanbul. The wetlands around the city belong to Kolkheti National Park.
