Recanto das Emas is one of the administrative regions of Brazil's Federal District, southwest of the Plano Piloto of Brasília. It was created in the early 1990s as a planned settlement, and its map shows that origin clearly. Residential blocks, known as quadras, are arranged in orderly rows along the main avenues.
The name means roughly corner, or refuge, of the rheas, the large flightless birds of the Brazilian cerrado. In places the surrounding landscape is still savanna and gallery forest. From above, the regular geometry of the town ends sharply where the cerrado begins, and streams and green strips mark the edges.
The internal pattern is dense and repetitive: small house lots packed into rectangular blocks, broken by wider avenues, schools, parks and commercial strips.
