Reisterstown lies in Baltimore County, northwest of Baltimore, in the hilly Piedmont country of central Maryland. Its map is organised around one long line: the old road from Baltimore toward the west, which becomes Main Street as it passes through the historic centre. Around it, curving suburban streets, cul-de-sacs and shopping areas spread over gentle ridges and stream valleys.
The town takes its name from John Reister, a German immigrant who founded it in the 1750s along the route that later became the Reisterstown Turnpike. The older part of Main Street still holds early buildings and is recognised as a historic district, while later growth followed highways and the spread of suburban housing across the county.
