Relau is a residential area on Penang Island, in Malaysia, set between the island's forested central hills and the flatter land running south toward Bayan Lepas. On a map it looks layered. Curving roads follow the contours at the foot of the hills, and housing estates and high-rise blocks fill the gentler ground below.
This part of Penang grew quickly as the island expanded south from George Town. Much of Relau's street network consists of looping estate roads and cul-de-sacs rather than a grid, reflecting planned residential development on uneven terrain. A large public park, the Relau Metropolitan Park, gives the area a sizeable green space among the housing.
A Relau map poster shows the point where the island's steep interior meets its built-up plain. Road lines grow denser as the slope eases, and the green edge of the hills appears as an empty area on the map. It is a good example of how topography shapes a modern suburb even when the hills themselves are not drawn.
