The Nieuwe Maas and the Noord border the town, and across the water lies Kinderdijk with its famous row of windmills. From above, Ridderkerk is enclosed by dikes and water, a typical Dutch polder settlement that has grown into a modern suburb.
The town's historic core developed along dike roads, and the long, linear shapes of these older streets are still visible on the map. Around them, post-war neighbourhoods fill the polders with more regular layouts. On the town's edge, the Ridderkerk interchange, where the A15 and A16 motorways meet, forms a large, complex knot of loops and ramps.
