Rome sits in Oneida County in central New York, on the low ground between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek. That location made it an important portage between the Hudson and the Great Lakes long before the city existed. On a map the streets form a broad grid across the flat valley, and the Erie Canal, the Mohawk and the rail lines draw long lines through and around it.
Construction of the Erie Canal began here on 4 July 1817, and a reconstructed Fort Stanwix, now a national monument, stands in the middle of downtown. Rome was later known as the Copper City for its copper and brass mills. The former Griffiss Air Force Base, now a business park, occupies a large area on the east side of the city.
