Rostov-on-Don stretches along the right bank of the Don, not far from where the river reaches the Sea of Azov. The city climbs a slope above the water in a neat grid of long parallel streets, with Bolshaya Sadovaya Street running through the centre as its main axis.
Across the river, the left bank is low and green, with beaches, parks and floodplain, giving a Rostov-on-Don map poster a strong contrast between the dense city on one side and open land on the other. Bridges cross the Don at intervals, tying both sides together.
Founded in 1749 as a customs post, Rostov grew into a major port and trading city, often called the gateway to the Caucasus. The eastern district of Nakhichevan-on-Don was founded by Armenians in the eighteenth century, and its own grid still stands out within the larger city.
