Ruaha lies in Tanzania's Morogoro Region, where the Great Ruaha River comes out of the uplands and enters the broad Kilombero valley. On the map, the town is a small patch of streets on a wide, flat floor, with steep ground rising to one side. Water and gradient decide most of the shapes around it.
This stretch of the valley is known for sugar cane. Large estates divide the land into long, regular blocks that show up clearly even at poster scale. The TAZARA railway, which links Tanzania with Zambia, also passes through this part of the valley. So do the roads that connect the settlements along the foot of the hills.
A Ruaha map poster combines three kinds of line: the meandering river, the geometric field boundaries and the modest street pattern of the town. In black and white they balance well. The river brings movement, the estates bring order, and the town gives the eye a place to rest in the centre of the frame.
