Saint-Étienne-du-Rouvray lies just south of Rouen, on the left bank of the Seine, where the river winds through a series of broad loops. From above, the town is a mix of patterns. Older streets sit near the river, larger postwar housing estates spread across the plateau, and railway lines and industrial zones run along the valley. Everything is framed by the woodland of the Rouvray forest.
It is one of the larger communes in the Rouen metropolitan area and has a long industrial and railway history.
