Salamanca rises on the north bank of the Tormes river in western Castile and León. From above, the old town is a dense, irregular web of streets on raised ground, bounded by broad avenues that follow the line of the former walls. The Roman bridge crosses the river at the foot of the hill, and beyond the historic core the city spreads out into regular modern districts on all sides.
The University of Salamanca, founded in 1218, is one of the oldest universities in Europe, and its buildings, together with the Old and New Cathedrals, give the centre its distinctive skyline. The historic city was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. Much of it is built from local Villamayor sandstone, whose warm colour has earned Salamanca the nickname La Dorada, the golden city.
