Salford sits directly west of Manchester, separated from it by the River Irwell, which bends in wide loops along the boundary. From above, the river forms a clear, winding line between the two cities, while further west the Manchester Ship Canal opens into the rectangular basins of Salford Quays.
The former docks have been transformed into MediaCityUK, home to broadcasters, along with The Lowry arts centre named after the painter L. S. Lowry, who lived and worked in the area. The University of Salford and Peel Park lie beside a loop of the Irwell to the north of the centre.
