Sanda lies inland from Kobe, beyond the Rokkō mountains, in a basin crossed by the Muko River. The older town centre gathers near the river and the railway in a compact pattern of streets and small blocks. On a map the valley floor is flat and densely built, and the surrounding hills are dotted with ponds, farm plots and forest.
From the 1980s onward, large planned residential areas were built on the hills, including the Kobe Sanda new towns such as Flower Town and Woody Town. On the map they appear as clean, curving road networks and evenly spaced blocks, very different from the older, irregular core. For about a decade Sanda was among the fastest-growing cities in Japan.
Many people also know the name from Sanda beef, raised in the surrounding region. Between the neighbourhoods lie rice fields and golf courses. A Sandachō map poster shows the balance between the river town, the planned suburbs and the green hills that frame them, with the Rokkō range beyond the southern edge.
